Research

Every solution begins with an understanding of the challenge. At Renal Research Institute, we are dedicated to advancing the scientific knowledge about kidney disease and its treatment options. It is this knowledge that is the solid foundation of any progress towards improvements in patient care. At each step along the way, we keep the patient firmly in mind, actively seeking for ways to translate the newly gained insights into concrete improvements to the way kidney patients are treated. Kidney disease with its various complications affects the entire body and is one of the most complex conditions known in internal medicine. Our research reflects this complexity by covering a wide range of scientific domains, all of which are of crucial importance in the treatment of patients with kidney disease. With some exceptions, most of our work focuses on patients with end-stage kidney disease, particularly those treated with hemodialysis.

Some of our most active domains of research involve calcium kinetic studies, phosphate kinetic modeling, red blood cell lifespan studies, regional citrate anticoagulation, sorbent-based hemodialysis, fluid status and dry weight assessment by bioimpedance analysis, body composition studies, mathematical modeling of erythropoiesis, and various aspects of avoiding intradialytic sodium loading, among others.

We routinely share our newest scientific findings with researchers and practitioners alike by publishing them in the most pertinent journals in the field and presenting our work at conferences around the world. We encourage you to take a look at our broad spectrum of scientific contributions. Innovation begins with research.

Current RRI studies:

MONDO (MONitoring Dialysis Outcomes) is a global initiative started by Renal Research Institute in 2010 in cooperation with its world-wide academic and institutional partners. Through this effort, RRI and its partners have collected longitudinal per-patient data in 155,000 patients from 27 countries on five continents (Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia). In the MONDO initiative, RRI collaborates with the following partners: Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) Europe, FMC Asia Pacific, FMC Latin America, FMC Canada, University of Maastricht (The Netherlands), University of California at Santa Barbara, and the Kuratorium für Heimdialyse und Nierentransplantation (Germany).

The original goal of this initiative was to explore determinants of patient survival in this diverse, world-wide population of dialysis patients. Given the vastness and depth of the available data, the aim of this project has subsequently been expanded to studying additional relevant information that could be utilized to improve dialysis care world-wide, such as factors related to hospitalization, anemia, bone and mineral metabolism, and characterizing the effects of geography and time of year on patient parameters. This vast assembly of information may make possible the comparison of effects of certain adjusted and un-adjusted data where the numbers available for analysis are very high.
